Oro Grande Rock Hunting

Oro Grande, NM is 38 miles south of Alamogordo.  The terrain is very rocky and rough, if you do not have a vehicle that can handle this terrain, please arrange to carpool with someone whose vehicle is more suitable.

You will be climbing on and around turquoise, gold and silver mine tailings. It is very rough and there are snakes (ick).  I recommend long pants, sturdy boots or shoes, long sleeve shirts, hats, gloves and sun screen.  Also bring adequate water and snacks.  There is no public restrooms and limited cell phone access.

Fossil Hunting on the road cut near Cloudcroft and High Rolls, NM

1. All the road cuts on either side of High Rolls are embedded with fossils.

2. Just west of the tunnel on highway 82 and across the highway from the lookout spot (park at the pull out) climb up the much used embankment to find horn coral.

Pecos Diamond Hunting near Artesia, NM

East of the city on highway 82, just east of the Pecos River, take either County Road 200 which is Karr Ranch Road and go past the ‘dump’…excellent collecting on the east side of the road for miles.

Pecos Diamond Hunting Roswell, NM

About 6-7 miles east of the city on highway380 turn north on the road opposite the direction of Bottomless Lakes State Park (409).  There are also good places to collect selenite and Pecos Valley quartz if you go south on 409 past the state park and the Wildlife habitat area.
